"This paid summer internship is designed for undergraduate students to gain research experience working on projects related to the Cleveland Clinic Discovery Accelerator, a partnership between Cleveland Clinic and IBM. The Discovery Accelerator was formed to advance healthcare research through high-performance computing that includes artificial intelligence, hybrid cloud and quantum computing.

Interns work directly with Cleveland Clinic principal investigators in leading-edge laboratories on Cleveland Clinic’s main campus. Students will gain not only research skills, but also skills related to information technology and professionalism, both areas of importance that will help them advance their career goals."

"The SSRP-Amgen Scholars Program is a fully-funded research-intensive residential program that takes place on Stanford’s beautiful campus for a eight-week period. Participants are matched with a member of Stanford’s distinguished faculty and work in one of our state-of-the-art research facilities. Each participant works with both a faculty member and a lab mentor to craft a research project. The lab environment provides challenging projects and involves a broad range of research techniques that are feasible within the eight-week period. The program culminates with a research symposium, where students present individual talks and posters on their summer projects in front of their peers, faculty, lab mentors, University administrators, and general public."

"The ADVANCE Undergraduate Institute (AUI) is a three-day intensive institute sponsored by Stanford Biosciences taking place March 27th-30th, 2024. AUI is designed to introduce aspiring scientists to the Stanford University campus and provide guidance on the graduate school admissions process. After completing the three-day institute, students have access to the AUI network and can engage with previous participants who are currently enrolled in a PhD in the Biosciences."

"The Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP) is a seven-week competitive research experience hosted by Northwestern University for sophomores and juniors from colleges and universities across the United States. All fields of research at Northwestern are open to SROP participants including the social sciences and humanities, physical sciences, chemical and biological sciences, technology, math, and engineering fields."

"SHURP is a ten-week summer research program primarily for college students belonging to groups that are under-represented in the sciences. SHURP presently has over 600 alumni from colleges across the country, and over 90% are continuing or planning to continue training and careers in the sciences. SHURP is one of the summer research programs participating in the Summer Research Early Identification Program (SR-EIP) of the Leadership Alliance, a consortium of over 30 colleges and universities dedicated to improving the participation of historically underrepresented students in graduate programs."

"Undergraduate interns will immerse themselves in an 8 to 10 week research experience over the summer (June-August), working directly with established mentors in various fields of biomedical research, including, but not limited to, cancer biology, immunology, cell and developmental biology, computational biology, and biomedical engineering. Interns will attend weekly education sessions covering topics from cutting-edge technologies and choice of model system, to career development. "The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) Division of Intramural Research is one of the premier research programs in genome sciences. NHGRI scientists have embarked on a number of efforts to unearth clues about the complex genetic pathways involved in human diseases. These efforts have used genomic sequence data from humans and other species to pinpoint hundreds of potential disease genes, including those associated with cancer; diabetes; premature aging; hereditary deafness; various neurological, developmental, metabolic and immunological disorders; and others. The NHGRI intramural program performs research at the intersection of genomics and the social and behavioral sciences. It also trains the next generation of genome scientists and clinicians in this domain. "

They will also develop scientific communication skills and actively participate in seminars and professional development workshops. "The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) through the Office of Minority Health Research Coordination invites students to submit their application for the Summer Research Training Program. The overall goal of this 10 week program is to build and sustain a biomedical, behavioral, clinical and social science research pipeline focused on NIDDK mission areas. The program strongly welcomes the participation of individuals with a demonstrated commitment to diversity including those individuals from underrepresented populations, those living with disabilities, or from disadvantaged backgrounds to apply."

"The Biomedical Engineering Summer Internship Program (BESIP) summer program is hosted by the BETA Center. Housed within NIBIB, the BETA Center is an NIH-wide resource that is comprised of researchers with specialized expertise in a broad array of bioengineering research areas. The BETA Center community brings researchers together with engineering and imaging expertise including biomedical imaging, biosensing, biomechanics, engineered/synthetic biology, nano/biomaterials, artificial intelligence, modeling, computation, and informatics. Central to BETA’s mission is to expand diversity, equity, and inclusion within NIH’s training programs."

The summer program at the NIAMS is a stimulating and rewarding experience that provides an opportunity for you to work side-by-side with some of the leading scientists in the world, in an environment devoted exclusively to biomedical research. "The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) Summer Research Internship Program introduces undergraduate students aged 18 years and older to the field of substance use and addiction. Students participate in research internships by working with leading NIDA scientists at universities across the United States for eight weeks during the summer.  The internship may include laboratory experiments, data collection, data analysis, formal courses, participation in lab meetings, patient interviews, manuscript preparation, and literature reviews. In addition, each intern will have an opportunity to deliver a brief presentation on their research project at the end of the internship."

U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Programs

"The Health Equity Fellowship Program was created to support the diversification of the public health and health-related workforce. The public health nutrition workforce, like many areas of health, needs assistance with diversification and the recruitment of a new generation of nutrition professionals. This 12-week fellowship was developed to support those efforts. Since 2002, the fellowship program has prepared over 1,000 students with practical skills in the Essentials of Public Health Services and Core Competencies of Health Education and Promotion. Federal, regional, state and local health agencies provide real-world work experience to students for 12 weeks to complete health equity projects in the areas of HIV, Cancer, Obesity, Cardiovascular Disease, Diabetes, Lupus, Nutrition, Mental Health, Program Planning, Health Policy, Tobacco, Injury/Violence Prevention, Aging, COVID and more. There is no cost to the agency to serve as a placement site for a student fellow."

"The University of Michigan Future Public Health Leaders Program (Michigan FPHLP) is a residential summer program funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Through field placements, skill building workshops and mentorship, Michigan FPHLP provides students with opportunities for growth, learning and awareness in the field of public health. The ultimate goal of the program is to increase the diversity of the public health workforce and the people committed to reducing health disparities. 

Michigan FPHLP students will be housed on the University of Michigan's campus for 10 weeks to dive deep into the field of public health. Students will participate in curriculum days at the University of Michigan School of Public Health and engage with public health professionals through their field placements."

"The MCHC/RISE-UP Program provides opportunities for enhanced public health leadership training in maternal and child health, focusing on social determinants of health, elimination of health disparities, and developmental disabilities. Grant funding for this program was awarded to Kennedy Krieger Institute by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) John R. Lewis Undergraduate Public Health Scholars Program to develop a national consortium of institutions and universities that provides undergraduate scholars with three public health leadership experiences: (1) clinical, (2) research, and (3) community engagement and advocacy."

"The Occupational Health Internship Program (OHIP) is a full time, paid summer internship designed to link the skills and interests of students with the needs of workers employed in an under-served or high hazard job. Teams of two interns are assigned to a union or worker organization where they receive supervision from a designated staff member and an academic mentor. The 2024 OHIP training sites are Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Madison (WI), Minneapolis, New York City and the San Francisco Bay Area."

Together, they represent the broad spectrum of public health practice. The SURF Programs are designed for sophomore and junior level students who are US residents.  Students must be able to commit to a 10-week program to do a research internship. 

SURF students are matched with an appropriate faculty advisor, based on mutual research interest. The advisor and intern design a specific research project within the context of the research focus of the advisor's laboratory."

"NSF funds a large number of research opportunities for undergraduate students through its REU Sites program. An REU Site consists of a group of ten or so undergraduates who work in the research programs of the host institution. Each student is associated with a specific research project, where he/she works closely with the faculty and other researchers. Students are granted stipends and, in many cases, assistance with housing and travel. Undergraduate students supported with NSF funds must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States or its possessions. An REU Site may be at either a US or foreign location."
